Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier has cemented Clonakilla's reputation as one of Australia's top small wineries, having been named NSW Wine of the Year in 1999, Penguin Wine of the Year in 2002 and one of Australia's top ten Shiraz (Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine, July/July 2003). Inspired by renowned Rhone wine maker Marcel Guigal's single vineyard blends of Shiraz and the rare white grape Viognier, the Viognier grape accounts for between five and 10 percent of the blend, adding an intiguing floral dimension to the wine.

Clonakilla led the way in establishing the cool southern table lands of NSW as an important wine producing region. Recognising that the climate was not dissimilar to the Bordeaux region and Northern Rhone valley in France, Irish immigrant and research scientist John Kirk bought a a 44 acre farm near the village of Murrumbateman, 40 kilometres north of Canberra in 1971. He named the property Clonkilla ('meadow of the church') after his grandfather's farm in County Clare.

John's fourth son Tim has been working as winemaker and general manager since 1996. Tim incorporated many of the grape growing and wine making approaches of the famed Rhone valley and Burgundian wine regions into Clonakilla's wine making practices. In the vineyards, wine leaf canopies are opened up and regularly hand-pruned to limit yields and produce grapes with riper flavour profiles. Whole bunches are included in the ferments and the wine is matured in French oak barrels.  Source: Clonakilla Winery
