Madame Pommery is perhaps the Champagne's district's most famous citizen. After taking over the fledging Champagne house upon the sudden death of her husband in 1858, Madame Pommery transformed Pommery into one of France's most well-known labels.

Notable among her many achievements was her purchase of over 20 kms of Gallo-Roman tunnels under Reims, where millions of champagne bottles are stored at a constant 10 degrees celsius. Many other Champagne houses followed her lead. Madame Pommery also pioneered the move towards sparkling instead of still Champagne.
