Table of Contents Terrific Buys from A Quality Cellar, 7 Years in the Making! Wine Panel Reviews of Wines Available on the Wine Market This month we highlight some terrific buys from a very special newly listed wine cellar. Our Wine Panel has been busy sampling vintage classics and some of their reviews are highlighted here. Thanks also to the Fine Wine Club in Western Australia. They recently purchased a number of wines from the Cellarit Wine Market, which were reviewed by their club members, and a few of their reviews are also highlighted below. Terrific Buys from A Quality Cellar, 7 Years in the Making!
Every so often we have the pleasure of presenting a special cellar such as this one. Our vendor started a Cellarit storage account 7 years ago...and added to it regularly. Now, the time has come to sell and our instructions were to price the wines keenly for fast sale. So, get in quick because they are great buys that won't last long. Enjoy!
Fox Gordon Eight Uncles Barossa Shiraz 2002 $18.50 View/Buy Slippery fine tannins, plenty of vanilla oak with some dried herbs and a slightly spicy edge. It's big and ripe but not over the top. Not bad at all. Figjam, 13 May 2011 Passing Clouds The Angel Cabernet Blend Bendigo 2000 $25 View/Buy A nicely balanced, well made wine which seems like it could last another 5 years with ease ...a welcome alcohol of 13% and quite a refined palate filled with cherries, plums and cedar to the fore...some length as well. A nice offering rounded out nicely by a decade of bottle age. The Innocent Dingo, 13 May 2011 Hanging Rock Heathcote Shiraz 2001 $20.00 View/Buy A wine that is irresistible, draws you back for more, and more. And then suddenly, sigh, it's all gone. Smells and tastes of rich black fruits, earth, and American oak. The finish is very long, and shimmers, a dance between mineral and acid for the most part, with grapey tannins rounding it out. Sensational match for roast beef. Avid Vino 11 May 2011 Wirra Wirra McLaren Vale Shiraz 2002 $22 View/Buy Popped and poured. Opaque purple in colour. Dusty McLaren Vale nose. This is a fruit driven wine that manages to offer some earthy complexity. The ripeness of the fruit does result in some lingering heat but does not overpower. Should appeal to most. The Innocent Dingo, 7 May 2011
Charles Cimmicky The Red Blend 1998 $17.50 View/Buy From the Barossa, a delicious and satisfying blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and cabernet franc. Popped and poured, ready to go immediately. Looks almost black in the glass, with purple edges. Nose shows herbs, some eucalypt and earth. Tastes of concentrated, rich black fruits with the herbs and earth in the background. Finish is long and nicely drying, with liquorice, menthol plus well balanced levels of alcohol, acid, and fine soft tannins. Drank over a couple of hours, the richness of the flavours intensified as that time passed, so there's likely plenty of life left in this vintage. Avid Drinker 16 May 2011 Wonga Estate Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2005 $25 View/Buy Clean, fresh, bright and balanced. It’s light but not too thin, uncomplicated yet interesting, ripe but understated. Nice use of oak with some very mild gamey notes. If more Pinots were like this I’d probably drink a lot more of them. Would match most foods too. Figjam 4 May 2011 Preveli Margaret River Merlot 2001 $26 View/Buy Popped and Poured. Medium to full bodied fruit driven style with hints of tobacco and leather. Very fine tannins. The softness of the merlot provides a surprisingly delicate, balanced palate. Mrs Dingo liked this more than myself but it was definitely one of the better Aussie merlots I've had. The Innocent Dingo, 29 April 2011 Kilikanoon Covenant Shiraz Clare Valley 2002 $33 View/Buy Textbook shiraz nose. This is plush and ripe, with succulent, almost juicy fruit to the fore. The palate is dense and structured, this is just a baby. There is licorice and black fruits, and the length is excellent. A touch linear right now, this will flesh out with age. A clear favourite on the night and a joy to drink. Fine Wine Club 19 April 2011 Mount Langi Giran Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot 1998 $20.90 View/Buy There is a lovely balance to this mature wine. There is still some primary blackcurrant fruit characters running though the wine, but there are plenty of secondary notes of earth and cedar. A delight to drink. Fine Wine Club 19 April 2011 EKM Wines Someled Shiraz McLaren Value 2002 $15 View/Buy Classic McLaren Vale fruit. There is the plush, ripe fruit that is so seductive of this style of wine. The palate is still quite firm and tight. There is good attack and excellent line and length, though this should get more generous with time. Fine Wine Club 19 April 2011 The Fine Wine Club regularly reviews wines and offers great tips for best buys.
