Ranked #5 of 36 2002 Shiraz from Barossa Valley

Huon Hooke
Dark chocolate nose; solid and deep, smooth and elegantly weighted in this group. Dominant chocolate makes it seem a touch simple, almost as if it lacks complexity. Good fleshiness and extract. Now to 17+ years.

95 Points Robert Parker
Deep garnet colored, the 2002 RWT Shiraz presents a lovely aromatic core of fragrant berry preserves, plums and kirsch, anise and a touch of incense. Full-bodied, concentrated and taut, this is still very youthful with lively acid and a firm, fine tannic backbone to support the very long finish.

94 Points James Halliday
Deep colour; lots of new French oak on both bouquet and palate, but also plenty of dark fruits; very good mouthfeel and texture, ripe tannins; given the benefit of the oak doubt. Quality cork, but, surprisingly, stained. Drink to 2017.

The outstanding 2002 Shiraz RWT is a 100% Shiraz, single region (Barossa) offering that typically spends 14 months in a combination of two-thirds new and one-third old French oak. Expansive and rich with a broad texture, and a complex nose of white chocolate, raspberries, black cherries, and licorice, this spicy, rich, medium-bodied, elegant 2002 should drink well for 10-12 years.
