Ranked #88 of 114 2006 Shiraz from Barossa Valley
85/100
3 Stars
Huon Hooke
Medium deep red, very little purple. Forward nose with some jammy overripe scents, but sweetly ripe and somewhat dead-fruit. Disappointing for this label: it lacks vitality and freshness, is hot from alcohol; heavy, clumsy and overdone.

97 Points Robert Parker
The flagship 2006 Johann Georg Shiraz comes from a 131-year-old vineyard and spent two years in French and American oak hogsheads, two-thirds new. Purple/black in color with legs that slowly ooze down the glass, it reveals an expansive perfume of wood smoke, lavender, mineral, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. Opulent on the palate, this velvety-textured, rich Shiraz has that extra dimension of complexity that only old vines can deliver. For optimum pleasure, cellar this special effort for 6-8 years and drink it from 2015 to 2036.

96 Points James Halliday
One of those rare wines when very high alcohol does not compromise the palate, its mix of blackberry, dark chocolate and licorice in a savoury spectrum; very good length; vines planted 1875. Drink to 2020.
