Castelgiocondo Brunello Di Montalcino Sangiovese Blend
Sangiovese Blend

89 Points Robert Parker

The 1997 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta di Castelgiocondo is a focused and determined wine that is laced with black cherry, sweet spice, candied fruit, menthol notes, root beer and licorice. The brightness and overall buoyant lift to the bouquet is very attractive. Brunello Castelgiocondo changes gear in the mouth where instead of brawn and power, it delivers a compact and smooth finish. The wine is at its peak drinking moment now, or perhaps slightly beyond it. Drink: 2014-2019.

Castelgiocondo in the Sienna area of Tuscany was acquired by Frescobaldi in 1989. 152 hectares of the 807 hectare estate is devoted to the production of Brunelllo di Montalcino.

The 1997 vintage was described by critics as a 'brilliant' vintage characterised by sweet, luscious fruit, enhanced structure, balanced and style. At an 2002 EWS Blind Tasting in New York the wine scored 92 points: "Fairly deep color. Rich, expressive nose. Really big on the palate with jammy cherry fruit and great structure. The wine appeals to both hedonistic and intellectual instincts. Overall, a very good wine that was overshadowed by the best wines in this tasting."
