Huon Hooke

Huon Hooke

Bright, light yellow colour. Tremendously intense aroma of lemongrass, lemon pith fruit, super-fragrant and lifted with some spicy characters which gather intensity through the palate. Lovely, soft, finely textured chalky palate, dry but not austere. Long, long aftertaste.
Tasted: 25/08/2012
Drink: 2012 to 2024

97 Points James Halliday

Light straw-green; there is a purity to the bouquet that sets it apart from almost all other '12 rieslings, a purity echoed in the faultless balance of the palate, taut lime and mineral driving through on the finish and lingering aftertaste. Great now, greater still in another decade; attention to detail is in Jeffrey Grosset's DNA. Drink to 2032.

The most sublime Polish Hills are breathtakingly gorgeous in their youth, and 2012 is the equal of the finest. Then it goes further. I cannot recall an Australian riesling of such refined poise, utter calm, magnificent concentration and devastating purity. Glorious white lilies and granny smith apple blossom glide through a bouquet of focused lime fruit and perfectly ripe lemons. The flow of fruit precision on the palate is an epiphany, every bit as hauntingly perfumed as the bouquet. Polish Hill slate surges in a cascade of mineral texture of profound depth and presence, rippling onward with unrelenting perseverance. Grosset Polish Hill 2012 is every bit worthy of the highest score I have awarded any Australian riesling - and, for that matter, any wine under $50. Don''t miss this crucial chapter in Australian riesling history. Released September 1. Drink 2022 - 2032.

The 2012 Polish Hill Riesling has an expressive nose replete with very ripe and seductive, warm apples and green mango aromas intermingled with frangipani, soursop and honeydew. Opulent in the mouth, it is youthfully tight though, like the nose, it already has an expressive character and is finishing long. Though approachable now, it should drink best from 2015 to 2026+.
