Straw, hay and toasty, smoky, meringue-like aromas; flavours of pear, and apples both green and red. The finish is fine, dry and cleansing. A bright, lively wine, and you don't notice the 11 grams/litre dosage. The balance is good and it's an excellent aperitif or anytime style.

The latest release of Piper-Heidsieck's NV Cuvée Brut is showing well, offering up attractive aromas of fresh pears, green apple, dried flowers and subtle hints of wheat toast and fresh bread. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, generous but nicely focused, with an enveloping core of fruit, ripe but racy acids and a nicely balanced finish. This is a very solid non-vintage cuvée that should evolve gracefully for the coming decade.

Some years ago, while tasting different lots of the Brut NV blend, one lot stood out as particularly special. Based
on the splendid 2008 vintage, it was left in the cellar for an additional year and bottled as a new, more serious
extension of the brand. The label refreshingly features base vintage, reserves, dosage, time on lees and bottling and
disgorgement dates. Production of Essentiel grew from a small base in 2017 and has increased progressively each year.
A complex and characterful cuvée that leads out with Piper’s signature red apple crunch and lemon freshness, and
backs it with excellent complexity of brioche, toast and nougat. It coasts with good length and elegant refined acidity,
true to the philosophy of the house. Fine salt minerality and seamlessly integrated dosage confirm a classy blend.

Ripe pears, crisp green apples and flowers emerge from Piper-Hiediesck’s NV Brut Cuvee. This medium-bodied non-vintage Champagne offers excellent persistence and a long, clean finish. It is a very solid effort at this level. The Brut Cuvee is 55% Pinot Noir, 30% Pinot Meunier and 15% Chardonnay. This is lot L070921 12253, disgorged December, 2007. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2010.
