Tips on Wine Valuation & All the Selling Details!

"What's the right price to sell my wine?"

Determining optimal selling prices is a snap using Cellarit's handy wine valuation tools including our "intelligent" link to the Wine-Searcher database of current wine prices. Winesearcher is the "Google of wine" and buyers flock to it from around the world to help them with wine valuation and wine buying decisions. Our wine valuation tools are free for you to use with our compliments whether you decide to sell your wine or not.

To determine the price to sell your wine:

  • Click on the Adjust Wine Quantity/Price icon next to the wine you wish to sell, then click on the link to Winesearcher
  • Your wine details automatically upload to Winesearcher and return a result page of prices for your wine
  • Use the information to enter a sell price for your wine that's competitive with the other listings shown on Winesearcher
If there's no current price listed on Winesearcher, consider trying the following for valuation guidance:

  • The Cellarit Wine Market to see if anybody else has the same wine for sale
  • Wine Auction results (but make sure to add the buyer's commission to the prices shown!)
  • Your purchase price - consider adding a reasonable markup that reflects the time held, costs of storage, etc. for your wine
  • If all else fails try typing the wine into Google for pricing clues or contact us

Here's what happens instantly and automatically when you list wine for sale...

  • Your Wine Cellar updates to show that your bottles are listed for sale in the Wine Market
  • Your bottles are added to the appropriate sections of the Wine Market, available from that moment to a world-wide audience of wine buyers
  • Your bottles are also featured in the new listings tab of the Wine Market

...And within hours your wine is also advertised via a variety of channels!

Here are just some of the ways that Cellarit helps you sell wine...and what some of your fees go towards:

  • Your bottles are advertised via wine search engines (such as Wine-Searcher). Cellarit pays fees to each service to help you sell wine.
  • Your bottles are advertised via the search results when somebody types "buy [winery] wine" into a general search engine (such as Google). Cellarit has invested heavily in website "search engine optimisation" to ensure buyers can find your wine.
  • Each month the Cellarit Newsletter features new listings, including yours, to our many thousands of subscribers world-wide. Each day active wine buyers register or join the Cellarit mailing list - it's been building up to its current size for many many years.
  • We're always working on new ways to highlight your wine and make it as easy as possible for buyers to find and purchase your wine

Make changes anytime and even sell the same wine at different prices

Good news - there's no charge for changes so you can update your listings as much as you like whenever you like!

  • You can change your price anytime. If your wine is selling so quickly that it's "flying out the door" consider raising the price. If your wine isn't selling consider lowering the price (it will feature on the "price drops" tab for added exposure).
  • You can add more bottles for sale or remove bottles from sale anytime and as much as you wish
  • You can also sell the same wine at different prices. For example, if you have 12 bottles of the same wine you may want to sell 6 bottles at $50 each and 6 at $55 each.

Here's what happens when somebody purchases your wine

  • Your bottles are automatically removed from the Wine Market and your My Wine Cellar list the as they sell
  • You receive an instant notification email each time you sell wine
  • You receive a summary list of wine sales on your monthly invoice via email along with a PDF version for your files
  • Your account is credited for the proceeds of your wine sales at the end of each month

Commissions, Proceeds and Payment when you sell wine:

  • Your wine listing price is inclusive of the 11.5% buyer's commission (min. $2.20/bttl)
The buyer's commission is part of the listing price of your wine so buyers know exactly how much the wine costs. This method allows your wine to be advertised on a "like for like" basis compared with other retailer's wine (see the "advertising" information above). This is extremely important because we're trying to help you sell your wine at a retail price instead of an auction price. Buyers hate surprises and a fee on top of the advertised price will scare them away or they'll buy from another retailer for less.

  • Your seller's commission is also 11.5% but you can earn up to 1.5% of that back in the form of credits for reduced or even free storage!
  • Your proceeds are calculated after subtracting the buyer's and seller's commission:
    • Proceeds = (Listing price)-(Buyer's commission)-(Seller's commission)
  • Payments of your wine sales proceeds (net of any wine storage fees) are direct-deposited into your bank account on the 15th day of the month following the sale. Note: only net payments totaling $25 or more are transferred; lesser amounts will roll-over to the next month.
  • GST is included in all of Cellarit's fees and charges and Cellarit handles all GST aspects of the sales process as part of its service

What you can't expect from Cellarit when you sell wine

The Cellarit model is somewhat unique and sits somewhere between wine retail and wine auction. There are pros and cons accordingly. Also, over the years wine investment companies such as Heritage Fine Wines and WineOrb (both defunct) employed a commission based sales force to phone prospects with high-pressure pitches to sell wine.

  • Cellarit does not "push" wine
    • If somebody's looking for a certain wine or vintage or winery, etc., we've heavily stacked the odds in your favour so they'll find their way to the Cellarit site and buy your wine at the price you've set
  • We can't guarantee a time-frame when you sell wine - some wine sells quickly and some wine doesn't
    • If it's a popular or well-know wine that's well-priced it will sell more quickly
    • If it's an unknown wine or a wine with a limited audience it will take longer to sell
  • The economic environment may influence how much wine you sell, the price and the timeframe
    • At the end of the day wine is not a necessity (nobody "needs" a bottle of Penfolds Grange) so it stands to reason that economic circumstances will affect wine sales for better or worse
Although the wine selling process at Cellarit may take longer we're confident that you'll achieve better prices and that our highly competitive fee structure will put more money in your pocket.

One Last Important Note:

The Cellarit Wine Market is 100% live, meaning that when you list a wine for sale it's available to wine buyers to purchase from that moment. Please take care to proof-read your price/quantity and check the listing in the Wine Market. If you mistakenly list a $50 bottle for $5 somebody might get a great bargain at your expense!
