Huon Hooke

Huon Hooke

Deep brick-red colour with a tawny rim. Wethers' bellies, gamy, very developed bouquet. A more forward vintage. Very drying tannins and not a great volume of fruit. The tannins are taking over. This bottle is a bit past its best.

94 Points Robert Parker

This estate’s most renowned offering is their old vine (90+ years) Shiraz called The Dead Arm. The unfined/unfiltered 2000 The Dead Arm Shiraz is one of South Australia’s finest wines of the vintage. A perfume of grilled steak intermixed with blackberries, new saddle leather, earth, pepper, and melted licorice rises from this awesome red. With great power, richness, and no hard edges, it is still young and primary, but should hit its peak in 3-7 years, and last for two decades or more.

94 Points James Halliday

Medium to full red-purple; masses of dark plum, prune and licorice fruit on the bouquet, then a palate flooded with the same fruit characters plus a generous dash of bitter chocolate; lots of tannin and extract; needs a decade. Drink to 2016.

This is a delicious, superbly balanced wine. Floral and spicy nose. Tastes of blueberries, raspberries, plums, black pepper, spices, raisins. Has a touch of concentrated sweetness that comes and goes, not present in every sip, but by mid-way through the bottle I was longing for it. Full bodied yet smooth, great structure, tannins have softened and are in perfect balance with the acid, leading to a nice long finish. Frankly that all sounds a bit clinical. What is important with this wine is how it all comes together as a delicious whole, how good it tastes (fantastic), and how good it makes you feel (on top of the world). Highly recommended. Drink in the next 1 to 5 years
