Ranked #10 of 57 2004 Shiraz from Barossa Valley

Huon Hooke
Deep red purple colour; excellent hue. Superb nose: great fruit quality: dark fruits; violets and cherries, floral and aromatic. Lovely smooth well-modulated palate; supple sweet fruit, very young and underdeveloped but delicious. Has a big future. Lashings of tannin all the same. Elegant. Best in 3 to 30 years.

The 2004 Shiraz “RWT” was barrel-fermented and aged for 14 months in 69% new French oak. Opaque purple-colored, it delivers an expressive nose of smoke, leather, grilled bacon, game, blueberry, and licorice. Full-bodied, it is dense, ripe, and layered as well as opulent. More forward than the Magill Estate, this hedonistic Shiraz can be enjoyed now but will continue to evolve for another 8-10 years.

Deep garnet in color, the 2004 RWT Shiraz has a meaty nose showing some tar and earth hints on top of a core of baked currant and cherries. Medium-bodied, the savory palate is structured by chewy tannins. It is holding up but is not as expressive as its predecessors. Going through a mute patch?

While the toasty, charry oak is evident; the wine comes together on the medium- to full-bodied palate which has outstanding line and length. Gold medal National Wine Show '06. Drink to 2029.
