Ranked #6 of 17 2007 Shiraz Viognier from Canberra District

Huon Hooke
Slightly developed colour for its age: medium red, slight purple. Barbecued meats, dry spices and a hint of tomato sauce. Palate is drying and rather austere, with a major tannin grip and drying aftertaste. Not very approachable right now. Later, after extended breathing: more enjoyable: a very elegant, savoury/spicy style of medium-bodied shiraz. Not big, but all about elegance.

The flagship is the purple/black 2007 Shiraz-Viognier. The exquisite perfume of smoke, lavender, floral notes, Asian spices, and blueberry leads to a tight but promising, already complex wine. It has gobs of sweet fruit and outstanding length. Give it 4-6 years and drink it from 2013 to 2026.

Vivid colour; it is hard to imagine how more flavour could be generated at this alcohol, even if it is only 1 tonne to the acre; a perfumed bouquet and an Arabian night of dark berry flavours; the tannins show masterly winemaking at work; only 150 dozen made. Drink to 0.
