Ranked #48 of 49 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon from Wilyabrup

Huon Hooke
Includes 8% petit verdot and 4% cabernet franc. Deep red/purple colour. Rather flat, open-knit, prune-like aromas, borderline aldehydic. Hints of dried banana. Soft, round, pillowy flavour and fine, gentle tannins, but it lacks depth and detail. Where is the complexity of flavour? Overripe fruit is the problem. The wine lacks vitality and backbone; deficient in character, fruit and - above all - freshness. Very disappointing.

Deep garnet in color, the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon displays aromas of warm cassis and black plums with underlying nuances of espresso, anise, leather, tar and black olives. Medium to full-bodied, it offers a generous amount of mouth-filling black fruit and earthy flavors supported by a medium to firm level of finely grained tannins and balanced, enlivening acid, finishing long. Drinking well now, it should cellar gracefully to 2022+.

Positive red-purple colour; in the mainstream of Moss Wood style: supple, round and impeccably balanced, yet with regal cabernet expression. Small wonder that Moss Wood has one of the most loyal mail/email lists in Australia, and this release will please its followers as much as any prior year. Drink to 2029.
