Medium crimson-purple; a wine with a long and proud history dating back to the 1970s; a totally harmonious blend of the two varieties, blackcurrant, blackberry, plum and black cherry woven together with fine tannins and quality oak. A perfect example of a medium-bodied red wine. Drink to 2029.

I imagine the blend records for this wine, first made in '74, have changed little over the intervening years. It's a very interesting wine, a blend of 73% cabernet, 27% shiraz, all from the Eden Valley; its combination of blackcurrant, blackberry and plum all speak of quality. Drink to 2035.

The first edition of this wine was the 1974, the worst SA vintage ever encountered, marking the first outbreak of downy mildew that caught vignerons completely unprepared; FDR1A was one of few wines to succeed, giving it immortality. This wine comes from one of the best recent vintages, spending 16 months in French oak, with vibrant fruit and immaculate tannins - and a shocking cork. Drink to 2020.

Beautiful colour; the bouquet is a powerful and heady mixture of pure black fruits, spice, licorice and well-handled toasty oak; the palate is dense and powerful, but there is a lightness to the fruit that seamlessly dances across the palate from start to finish; not a wine for everyone, but a wonderful hommage to an iconic Australian blend; terrific value for the quality. Drink to 2025.

Cork snapped on extraction. The wine is remarkable in the context of the season. Medium-weight but pure and essence-like. Blackcurrant, olive, redcurrant and sweet, clovey oak. Gentle massage of tannin. A Monty for medium-term cellaring. No seams. Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz. Drink to 2024.

Fragrant cedar, spice and black fruits on the bouquet, with added nuances of licorice and chocolate on the long, even flow of the palate; fine, ripe tannins. Drink to 2017.
