Huon Hooke
Deep red colour with a good rim of purple. The bouquet holds very ripe black fruits, cassis, blackberry, and a tinge of prune. There could be some overripeness here. The taste is full-bodied, rich and soft, but the acidity is a trifle prominent and disturbs the seamlessness of the palate. Around this there's a lushness of sweet, almost confectionery fruit flavour. It tightens up on the finish. Good, but the wine seems to have a slight lack of vibrancy. Better if cellared a few years? (later, the wine had a distinctly overripe character, not to my taste)

Deep garnet in color with a slight purple in the rim, Moss Wood's 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon opens with notes of crème de cassis, blackberry tart and anise with nuances of cloves, cedar, pencil lead, menthol and dark chocolate. Medium-bodied with oodles of opulence and spice on offer in the mouth, it has a gorgeous velvety texture, just enough freshness and great length.

The high quality vintage shines through this wine, illuminating its intricate multifaceted complexity; almost, but not quite, juicy cassis fruit is swathed in perfectly balanced French oak and gently ripe tannins. The only problem will be keeping your hands off it. Drink to 2042.
