Ranked #11 of 36 2014 Shiraz from Clare Valley
Deep red colour with a good tint of purple. The bouquet seems quite char-oaky, which would be unusual for this winery. Bold coconut, fruitcake and mint aromas. The palate is full-bodied and grainy in its texture, with heaps of firm tannins - it's in need of long cellaring. It's too tannic, raw and aggressive today. The track record, however, speaks for itself.
Drink: 2022 to 2044
97 Points James Halliday
100% shiraz from Central Vineyard bushvines planted in 1893, and the Eastern Vineyard planted in 1919. The wine takes a lot of air via glass swirling to express itself, but ultimately does so emphatically. Plum, black cherry and spices paint the flavour picture, and expand prodigiously on the back-palate and finish. As the late Len Evans would have said, it has flawless line, length and balance. Drink to 2049.
