Ranked #1 of 21 2016 Shiraz from Beechworth

Huon Hooke
Medium to deep red colour with a subtle tinge of purple with the ruby-red. There are spicy, peppery, herbal, humus-like and undergrowth aromas, and a little forward-development. The palate is fresh with crisp acidity and seems quite bunchy - although without the green accents of the Warner Vineyard. And it's more complex, with chocolate, smoky charcuterie and assorted spices. The wine is medium to full-bodied, not overly big, and the texture is pleasingly smooth and fleshy. Lovely fruit sweetness in the mid-palate. A delicious shiraz, already accessible now, but much better if cellared a while.

Deeper in colour than the '17, the starting point of consistent aromas and flavours. Blackberry, licorice and pepper tumble merrily across the palate, framed by fine-grained tannins and oak that provide the structure to support the fruit extravaganza. Drink to 2041.
