Huon Hooke

Huon Hooke

Deep red colour with a trace of purple and black. There's a burnished wood, black olive kind of aroma, and an extracted bitterness in the tannins. It's chewy and stolid on the palate. It tastes clumsy, overripe and a mite oaky.

Drink: 2015 to 2020

94 Points James Halliday

Colin Angas planted grenache in the '60s, but when 7% failed it was replaced (accidentally) replaced with mataro. Destemmed, open-fermented and matured in French puncheons (20% new) for 2 years. The bouquet is evocative, with notes of spice, brush fence and plum spice, the palate equally complex, putting the lie to the idea these varieties won't ripen in the Eden Valley. A long life ahead. Drink to 2027.
