Ranked #17 of 93 2021 Grenache from McLaren Vale

Huon Hooke
Deep, bright red/purple colour, with a a smoky-charcuterie, mixed spice and sweet blackberry bouquet. There's a wave of rich sweet fruit on entry, a flood of jammy berry flavour backed by tannins that are slightly bitter at first, then soften. A full-bodied, decadently rich and super-ripe wine, which will have many fans, me included.

These wines are far better than when last tasted. This said, this bridles a green edge amidst candied orange zest, tangy red-fruit allusions and a white pepper. Plays the pinosity card. Lacks mid palate, weight and drive, however. The verdant underbelly detracts from the jubilance that one expects from this style of grenache. Drink to 2024.
