Ranked #6 of 133 2006 Shiraz from Eden Valley

Huon Hooke
Very deep colour, red with barely any developed tint. A trace of crushed seashells. Concentration and depth, superb flavour and muscle, lavish tannins but nice and ripe. Boldly youthful and remarkable at this age. Big and ripe but also has fresh acidity. This will surely be a 50 year wine.

The 2006 Mount Edelstone Shiraz was sourced from a vineyard planted in 1912 with yields of less than 0.5 tons/acre. It was aged for 21 months in 65% new French and American oak. Purple-colored, the nose sports aromas of wood smoke, Asian spices, incense, blueberry, blackberry, and chocolate. Dense and packed, this full-bodied Shiraz has lots of flesh, succulent blue and black fruit flavors, impeccable balance, and a long, pure finish. Drink it from 2013 to 2021.

Deep purple-crimson; the bouquet is intense and full of spicy black fruits accurately foretelling the power and purity of the palate; this is an outstanding Mount Edelstone, indeed, I cannot remember any better than this; it has the focus and structure to guarantee a 30-year future, if this is what you are after. Alas, it will long outlive me. How good will the ?06 Hill of Grace be? Shiraz. Drink to 2036.
