Huon Hooke
A superb bottle and a magnificent vintage. Classic roasting-pan, cedar, new-leather aromas, a faint whiff of crushed ants, absolutely typical Barossa shiraz and a great example of it. Velvet tannins, fleshy and plush. Yum.

Deep garnet in color, the 2006 Basket Press offers a very earthy nose to begin with underlying notes of espresso, raw meat, pencil lead, nuts, mulberries and kirsch plus an emerging hint of blackberry preserves. Medium bodied, elegantly fruited and firmly structured in the mouth, it has a medium to firm level of chewy tannins and crisp acid supporting the concentrated, muscular fruit, finishing long with a pleasant hint of dried herbs. Delicious now, it should cellar to 2022+.

The brown glass, high-shouldered proprietary bottle gives the right message: this is a classic, gently understated Barossa Shiraz that will sail on for decades if the dubiously short cork permits. Drinking it sooner would not be a capital offence. Drink to 2026.
