Huon Hooke

Huon Hooke

Deep purple/red. Brilliant colour. Very smoky/oaky aroma. Young and fresh with bright fruit and lively red berry flavour, elegant weight and softness, nice balance and lacks the high acidity I was expecting. Concentration seems overdone and contrived. Blueberry and violets, a touch of Vegemite (possibly from oak or lees). A baby and needs a lot of time.
Tasted: 24/12/2011
Drink: 2014 to 2029

92 Points Robert Parker

Wirra Wirra’s “The Angelus” has to be called “The Dead Ringer” in export markets due to a naming conflict with a well known Bordeaux Chateau. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2009 The Angelus Cabernet Sauvignon (The Dead Ringer) displays cedar and toast hints over pronounced notes of creme de cassis, dried plums and blackberry preserves plus touches of peppered meat, bay leaf, cloves and cumin seed. Concentrated and taut on the full bodied palate, the young, tight-knit fruit is supported by firm grainy tannins and very crisp acid, finishing long and layered. It should drink best 2014 to 2024+.

95 Points James Halliday

Strong crimson-purple; the January heat spike did this medium-bodied wine no harm at all; the blackcurrant and cassis fruit does have some powdery tannins, but only as much as you would expect; the fine, juicy finish is totally beguiling. Drink to 2029.
