Very deep, dense purple/red colour. Fabulous nose of concentrated blueberry and blackberry aromas. Enormous fruit sweetness and decadent, lush fruit and texture. Totally seductive. Great power and persistence. An astonishing wine of monumental depth and power, but also fabulous texture and harmony. A very great wine in the making.

Excellent purple-crimson colour; the seamless bouquet is already showing elegance, complex cedar, cigar box aromas entwined with perfect ripe fruit characters. The palate has great drive, length and line; outstanding tannins give the wine great balance, texture and a certain authority; this is not a fruit bomb style. By far the best three-year-old Penfolds red wine I have tasted. Drink to 2040.

Is it really worth the hype? You read about it here first (see Edition 11 for my tasting notes) and it hit the streets on Wednesday. Less than 1000 cases, at no less than $1000. Benchmarks of such history-defining calibre are crucial for Australian wine at every level, and alongside recent Bordeaux First Growth indent campaigns it looks like a positive bargain! I have tasted this wine four times over the past three years and it gets incrementally more profound every time. If you must have a bottle, your best chance is Penfolds cellar door (Ph 08 8301 5544). Drink 2028 - 2043.
