Ranked #20 of 92 2011 Shiraz from Hilltops

Huon Hooke
Full red/purple hue. Subtle pepper spice aromas, very elegant and less bold and gutsy than this wine usually is. Medium-bodied and taut, refined, elegant and spicy/peppery in the mouth. Not as long or as charming as this maker's Canberra shirazes. But lovely drinking.

Finesse before power. True to the cool, wet 2011 vintage, this is a lighter, spicier and more textural rendition of Hilltops, laced with notes of violet perfume, crunchy blackberry fruit and an overlay of pepper. Fine, textural tannins carry its savoury fruit elegance long into the finish. A flattering style that makes for a compelling, albeit atypical, Hilltops. Drink 2012 - 2019.

This wine is made from Shiraz selected from four vineyards in the Hilltops district around Young on the South Western Slopes of New South Wales.
2011 was a cool vintage producing wines with delicate perfumes and fine tannins.
Cherry and spice notes; pepper against a background of fresh red berries. An elegant wine for drinking over five years.
