Ranked #12 of 68 2013 Riesling from Clare Valley

Very light colour; backward in every respect. The aromas are tight and ungiving at this stage. Fresh straw-like scents, a hint of yeastiness, taut and nervy, and tightly bound. It doesn't show as much overt lime citrus character as its sibling Polish Hill in 2013. The palate is restrained, taut and very dry, with a slight puckering touch of phenolic grip. Good length and line. This needs time and will mature superbly.

Classic Clare Valley riesling, made by a master of attention to detail from immaculately tended vines in an excellent vintage. Light straw-green; it doesn't have the sheer elegance of the Polish Hill, but has exceptional power, intensity and length. Drink to 2035.

Some have proclaimed 2013 among the finest Clare vintages of all. Time will tell, but my money is on cooler seasons like 2012 and 2002. The warm, dry 2013 has produced greater back palate presence and more phenolic structure, raising questions over how this vintage will appear after a decade in the cellar. Grosset has handled the season with his signature sensitivity, and its inherent structure does nothing to interrupt the clean acid line, persistent fruit focus and pronounced, fine, mineral structure of his Springvale. Pristine and focused, it captures the most delicate lemon blossoms, exact lime zest and granny smith apple fruit. Drink 2018 - 2023.
