Ranked #1 of 18 2015 Shiraz Viognier from Canberra District

Huon Hooke
Magnificent perfumes of floral and violet scents interwoven with pepper and assorted spices. The palate reveals tremendous concentration and riveting intensity, refreshing, seamless acidity and a long, long finish that seems almost endless. Whole-bunch fermentation is evident but adds to the bouquet without dominating. There’s a fascinating parade of aromas that keeps you entertained to the last. A great wine.

Incorporating 30% whole clusters, the 2015 Shiraz-Viognier looks a bit stemmy right now, which is why I've pushed its drinking window out a couple of years. It's still floral, spicy and richly fruited, with cherries and berries aplenty, plus savory hints of black olive. Maybe more velvety than silky at this early stage, I expect it to have a long, positive evolution.

Tim Kirk's Socratean dissatisfaction has led to changes in the vineyard and winery alike. One particular change is the increase in the percentage of whole bunches, resulting in even greater perfume and more texture, yet leaving the mouth fresh. Spices are embroidered on the red fruits with unequalled attention to detail. Drink to 2030.
