Veuve Clicquot Vintage Brut Champagne
Ranked #15 of 15 2008 Chardonnay Pinot Noir Pinot Meunier from Champagne
3.5 Stars
Huon Hooke

Huon Hooke

Light to mid-straw colour with a strong toasty bready bouquet revealing lots of pinot and lees-development. The palate is fresh and nervy with appley acidity and clean lines, but not the richness the nose promises. A pleasant, even good, wine without being stellar. The aftertaste is dry, assisted by phenolics. The price is not warranted

92 Points Robert Parker

Assembling 35% Chardonnay, 5% Meunier and 60% Pinot Noir, the 2008 Vintage Brut is one of the rare vintage Champagnes of Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin and it follows the earlier releases of 1999, 2004 and 2012. Disgorged in March 2015 with eight grams dosage, the bright colored 2008 has a very clear, fresh, pure and intense, as well as complex nose, with brioche, biscuit and prominent Chardonnay aromas. Pure, dry, straight and elegant on the palate, this is a refreshing and lifted, but also complex and expressive Brut. It also has tension, grip and a stimulating salinity in the finish. This Champagne is excellent and should be served with seafood.

96 Points Tyson Stelzer

Demarville lists 2008 in the top 10 vintages for Clicquot, a season of ‘wonderful depth, minerality and a fine and delicate spirit’. The wine he has drawn from this is as great as any Clicquot vintage I have tasted. A year before its release, it’s wound up tight, with coiled tension and tightly clenched acidity, yet at once light-footed in its airy delicacy. Beach-fresh lemon of high-noon brightness is the theme, touched with suggestions of blood orange rind and the beginnings of nougat and brioche. A glimpse of oak lends just a subtle, well-integrated toasty note, but the real highlight is its breathtakingly fine, expansive chalk mineral landscape. The secret with this vintage is to keep your hands off it for as many decades as you possibly can. It has the euphoric freshness to outlive even the most disciplined willpower.
