Deep-ish colour with tinges of brick-red and a faint hint of purple lingering. The bouquet is all about earthy/old leather mellow developed characters, touches of truffle and mushroom stock. The palate is intense and smoothly rounded, mellow and gentle with no sharp edges, the acidity in perfect harmony, the tannins fine and supple, providing gentle structure. Traces of pepper and mixed spices on palate mingle with roasting-pan and meat-stock flavours. Lovely semi-mature, and very regional, Hunter shiraz.

Planted on a raised river bed, hand-picked with a yield of 1t/a, initial cold soak, then 14 days fermentation with 20% whole bunches, pressed to French hogsheads (40% new) for 16 months. Deeply coloured, this is a fascinating picture of the '17 vintage with the contrast whole bunch with the other 80% of the fruit. It rumbles volcanically, discouraging further enquiry. It really is something way out of the ordinary. Drink to 2057.
