Kilikanoon Covenant Shiraz 2002

A Clear Favourite on the Night and a Joy to Drink

Reviewed by Fine Wine Club - Monday 23 May 2011 03:42 PM

Textbook shiraz nose. This is plush and ripe, with succulent, almost juicy fruit to the fore. The palate is dense and structured, this is just a baby. There is licorice and black fruits, and the length is excellent. A touch linear right now, this will flesh out with age. A clear favourite on the night and a joy to drink.

Full throttle

Deep dark purple, opaque. Tasted over two nights, plan being to give it plenty of air ahead of a birthday meal the second night. As it turned out, a great plan! First night just one big glass, with no food. Dark cherries and black pepper, lots more there, nice, but indecipherable, overpowering, almost overwhelming. Put in fridge overnight. Second night tasted superb alongside roast veal. Again dark cherries and pepper, but now smoother, easier on both the nose and tongue, with kirsch, dark chocolate, blueberries, licorice, iron, and still more flavours surfacing as the last drop was drunk.
