Charles Heidsieck
Charles Heidsieck founded his Champagne house in 1851. He was a hard-working, colourful and creative man, who worked all his life to give his wines a reputation of the highest quality. In 1852 he was one of the first Champagne company owners to go to New York, where his charm and self-assurance seduced the Americans, who gave him the nickname Champagne Charlie. His wines were welcomed with enthusiasm, and by 1857 the company was shipping almost 300,000 bottles a year to America.
Charles Heidsieck's excursions to America were not without adversity. During the American Civil War Heidsieck was mistakenly imprisoned under suspicion of being a spy for the French government and the Confederacy. His imprisonment sparked an international incident between France and US, which became known as
The Heidsieck Incident. In 1989 Hugh Grant played Charles Heidsieck in the movie "Champagne Charlie."
Charles Heidsieck is today among the most prestigious brands of Champagne. With full confidence in the quality of its Champagnes and their potential for ageing, Charles Heidsieck lays down exceptional wines in its Gallo-roman cellars. The Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve has been carefully matured before sediment removal and an additional ageing of several years.
