A magnificent bottle of a magnificent wine. The bouquet explodes from the glass in a riot of fresh-baked bread and a multitude of other scents, the palate likewise formidably intense and powerful, penetrating and long, very dry and yet exquisitely balanced. A majestic Champagne!

It’s fascinating to taste the 2004 Brut Blanc de Blancs Comtes de Champagne after the 2002, something I have been able to do on a few occasions. The 2004 is all about minerality, precision and tension. It doesn’t have the sheer richness or power of the 2002, but it makes up for that with its crystalline purity and sheer energy. Bright hints of lemon oil, white flowers and crushed rocks are layered into the pointed, vibrant finish. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2034.

The 2004 Comtes brings back all the innocence of a joyful childhood, of scaling lemon and lime trees to plunder their tangy fruits, of a free-as-air dash through fields of daisies in endless blue daylight, of freshly roasted cashew nuts mounded in market baskets, and of a breathless plunge into an icy mountain rock pool. Then, nougat, pepper, gunflint and rising minerality of iceberg proportions. Such is the nervous tension, racy endurance and sheer stature of 2004 that it best be left until it at least attains adolescence. Do you really want to live forever, forever, forever? Drink 2019 - 2029.
